Re-Opening SKDC . . . . Go!

9/4/2020

Hello Studio Families!

Finally! It’s time to GO!
We have more information for you as we are very close to our reopen. Read on for answers to questions we’ve received, as well as our usual new season start reminders!
  1. When you arrive for your first class, take a selfie in front of our SKDC banner and post it on Instagram to enter our registration raffle! Be sure to tag the studio (@studiokdancing) in your pic and use the hashtag #studiok2020. Be sure to either make your post public or follow us so we can see your post. Winners will be announced in a couple weeks!
  2. Please make sure to send your dancer with plenty of water in a water bottle clearly marked with their name. Water only is allowed in the studio- no soda, Gatorade, etc. With this heat wave we need students to stay hydrated! We cannot sell water at this time and do not have a drinking fountain in the studio.
  3. Our dress code is on our website. Please make sure that your dancer has proper footwear as we cannot have bare feet in the studio due to guidelines. Previously, if a dancer had worn uggs, toms, crocs, sandals, we would have them remove them but that is not recommended. If your child does not have their dance shoes for the first week, please send them in a pair of tennis shoes or with socks.
  4. MASKS: Masks need to be worn in class and when entering and exiting the studio. Dancers will be given water and mask breaks during class. The faculty has been educated on the use of masks during physical activity and at different levels of exertion. The faculty has modified our lesson plans to include a portion of class that allows for a “cool down” period in which students can appropriately social distance, temporarily remove their masks, hydrate, and be challenged with a short mental dance activity! We are happy to share our detailed safety plan for dancing in a mask should anyone like more information. Please note - we are adhering to the plan outlined by the California Department of Public Health in regard to Proper Fitness Establishment Protocol. In their guidelines, our facility would only be allowed to have unmasked cohorts (classes) outside only. Outside classes would prove difficult due to heat, dance surface needs, and sound issues.
  5. Our studio policies will align with the state guidelines; as those hopefully begin to lessen over time so will our need for these current restrictions.
  6. Studio K’s safety plan, reopening procedures, and a copy of the CDPH guidelines can be viewed on our website.
  7. We recommend that parents of young children remain at the studio during class (outside or in your car). Should your child need assistance with using the restroom for example, we can briefly have you come inside with our guidelines of a mask, temperature check, and hand sanitizer.
  8. Parents can view class in the back patio area as long as social distancing is maintained.
  9. Once class begins, if there are only 1 or 2 dancers in attendance that day, they will be given a 30 min semi-private class and receive a makeup class credit to be used anytime during the season.
  10. Please remember that makeup classes need to be scheduled through the office due to class size restrictions.
  11. Our class schedule is subject to change. Classes with 4 or less dancers may be combined with other classes or suspended. Parents will be emailed if it is necessary for us to change, cancel, or combine their student’s class.
  12. If your child would like to do a trial class, please check with the office for available class space and to make an appointment to try class. We encourage our students to try new dances styles!
  13. Dancers who prefer to continue dance virtually, can join our Zoom Dance Club on Wednesday evenings!
  14. Finally, we ask that you remain flexible. Our process may need to change as we troubleshoot and discover exactly how things work best once our doors are actually open. Thank you again for your patience. Studio K, nor the rest of the dance community, has ever had to take these actions. We are learning as we go and will continue to revise our plan in the best interest of our students. This is a new experience for us and we appreciate your cooperation as we navigate through uncharted territory!
  15. Email questions can be submitted on our website by clicking on “Contact” and scrolling down to “Send Us A Note!” or by simply emailing us at studiokdancecenter@gmail.com
  16. If you missed any of the previous 2 emails in this series, please reach out so we can forward them to you.
I wish everyone a fun, safe (and cool!)  Labor Day weekend and we’ll see you soon!
Let’s GO!

Best Always,
Katy Abrego Cortines

Re-Opening SKDC Part 2

9/2/2020

Hello Studio Families!

It’s time to GET SET! and get dancing again!
This is our next step in making sure that everyone is set to return to class and knows our new policies and procedures.

Please watch the attached video to see exactly how we will be conducting classes under the new guidelines.

Here’s an overview!

  1. Students with a cough, runny nose, fever or other viral symptoms will not be allowed to take class. Do not come to the studio if you have recently been around someone with Covid-19.
  2. Parents please drop your child off no more than 5 minutes before class begins.
  3. It will be necessary for us to use the space outside the front door to line up each class. Please leave this area open and properly distanced for dancers only.
  4. Please do not allow the kids to hug outside while waiting. Yes, this is hard. It's so tough for us to not have that physical contact with everyone, but if we want to continue to meet in person it is important to follow the rules.
  5. Your teacher or someone from the office or administration will let you know when you may enter the building.
  6. A mask must be worn in the studio and when entering and exiting at all times.
  7. No parents are allowed to watch classes at this time. We are not able to have our lobby and common areas open yet.
  8. Dancers will have their temperature taken upon entering the building. Any student with a temperature of 100 or higher will be asked to go to the end of the line for a re- check. If that student registers a temperature of 100 or above again, they will be asked not participate in class.
  9. Dancers will be given hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting the studio rooms.
  10. Dancers are permitted to bring a small bag with water and dance shoes.
  11. Students will be exiting the back door of the downstairs dance room. Parents should come to the back patio to meet their child.
  12. Please exercise caution when driving as we have new pathways where pedestrians will be walking. It is very important that you be on time to pick up your dancer.
  13. Any student who is waiting to be picked up can wait at the green picnic table at the front of the studio.
  14. Students who have 2 classes in a row, will exit the building for a short break and some fresh air.  They will line up with their next class and then follow regular entrance protocol. No students will be allowed to gather in the danceroom, kitchen, or lobby after class.
  15. In all areas of the studio physical distancing will be practiced. No hands on corrections by teachers will be given until it is safe to do so.  No holding of hands or partner work will be done in classes at this time. No class curriculum will include shared mats, props, stickers, etc.

Please contact us via email on our website with any questions. Registration is open so go online now and let’s “GET SET” to dance! We can’t wait to see you!

Best Always,

Re-Opening SKDC, part 1

8/29/2020

Hello Studio Families!

We hope this email finds you well and we are excited to be gearing up for our September Re-Open!

Congratulations again to all on a fantastic virtual recital. To all those who were able to participate and to those who could not, we appreciate your hard work during last season’s many challenges. We made it through!

To new prospective families, we welcome you to our Studio K family and look forward to meeting you next month!

We will be sending you 3 updates in preparation for our re-opening on September 8th. There is so much information regarding our new policies that it will easier to impart this information in 3 parts rather than all together which would be very overwhelming. Each will detail a little more how we plan to keep dancing in our new normal. These new guidelines will also be on our website.

Our theme for the re-start is:

Ready,........Get Set,..........Go!!

This email is the “READY” part of our announcements and the first installment of our  re-start information.
Look for our “GET SET” email this weekend which will include a video that shows examples of how we will implement our new safety procedures.

There will be many changes but the most important thing to us is the safety and well being of each student, teacher and staff member who will be at Studio K.
Our priority is to re-open our studio in a way that allows us to stay open and to continue our goal of, at some point, returning to normal operating procedures.
Having said that, we realize that everyone has varying views on the current pandemic and the restrictions that are upon us as a community. Please know that our stance on adapting to the required procedures is simply based on our desire to re-open our doors and get back to dance.
If we do not comply with the required state guidelines and CDC recommendations, then we risk having to close once again and continue virtually.
Due to the circumstances we will need everyone’s complete cooperation with regard to our new policies. We cannot risk this new dance season and we intend to enforce all policies diligently until we are told by the appropriate agencies that we can discontinue them.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and  will view your finalized registration as an agreement to adhere to all newly implemented studio procedures.

Here’s where you can start!

  1. REGISTRATION- Registration is now open on our website and must be completed on our website.
  2. ACCOUNTS- Please make sure to update any changes to your account information on file to help us better serve you. For your convenience we offer monthly automated withdrawals for tuition if you would like that option.
  3. FRONT LOBBY- At this time we are not able to have parents or siblings in our lobby or common areas. We ask that you email the studio with questions. We appreciate your help with this. We want to be attentive to your needs and questions but also need to stay within our recommended guidelines.
  4. PAYMENTS- This season we are accepting payments on our website as our lobby will remain closed until further notice. If you need to pay with check or cash please have your dancer put it in the white payment mailbox located just inside the front door.
  5. EMAIL- You can submit email questions on our website by clicking on “Contact” and scrolling down to “Send Us A Note!”
  6. CLASS TIMES- We have had to restructure our schedule to accommodate our sanitation process. Classes will be 45-50 minutes in length to allow for proper changeover of classes and cleaning.
  7. CLASS SIZE- Class sizes have also been limited to meet our guidelines. Only the downstairs studio will be utilized at this time with a maximum of 10 students.
  8. MAKEUPS- There are no Drop In classes or In Person make ups allowed at this time due to class size limitations. It will be possible to schedule a specific makeup in an open class through the office.
  9. WAIT LIST- Should an In Person class be full, you may put yourself on the waitlist for that class.
  10. ATTIRE- Students will need to arrive in the proper dance attire for their class as the dressing room facility will need to remain closed until further notice.

We encourage all families to register now as our schedule will fill up quickly with smaller classes. We will add on class options as our schedule allows.
If you require a Zoom class option please contact us as we are considering a weekly virtual dance club.
Please contact us with any questions you may have and look for the “GET SET” email soon!

Studio K Update - We're so excited for what's next!

3/28/2020

Good Morning Studio K Dance Families:
As you know, we are following local and national recommendations to suspend in person classes at our Studio K facility. We have been working around the clock on several plans of action for the studio, which have then changed again and again, as national and local news has  evolved. At this time, we will remain closed. But we are taking these unexpected lemons and making lemonade :).

To our Dancers: Don’t worry! We have some incredible plans to keep our classes running and our students happily dancing! We will continue to deliver the dance experience you know and love at Studio K, just in a slightly different way.

To our Parents: Now more than ever, we understand that it is important for your child to have normalcy and routine. We want to come alongside our families and help you provide that continuity for them. We know you want your children to keep active, move, use their minds creatively, and still interact socially with their peers. This is exactly what we’ll be providing during the closure of our physical location!

Thanks to technology, we will be opening our “digital doors” and will be providing you with an online dance experience to keep our dancers moving, learning, interacting with their friends, and having fun during this time! Our staff has been busy during the closure, connecting with each other virtually and creating a program that allows our students to continue with their regular dance training and recital preparation! We are excited to share the features of our new dance package with you . . . .

--Live Streamed Classes:

We will be livestreaming classes on Zoom! This will allow all of our dancers to still receive their dance instruction in real time, as if they were at the dance studio. Just clear a little space to allow for movement, have your computer or tablet set up, and join our live class! Dancers will get their regular dance instruction, slightly modified for space and environment. Teachers will provide a chance to visit with friends and interact as well. [Instructions for Zoom to follow]
Then . . . . Our live streamed classes will be recorded, posted within 24 hrs, and available to view at any time - perfect for our dancers who want to dance some more throughout the day or missed the live class time. We love the idea of being able to offer this feature so that you can adapt to your new schedules at home and dance when it is convenient for you. This recording should prove valuable to our pre-school aged dancers who may not have the same attention span in this new dance at home environment. **Bonus - siblings will be able to join in as well!

--Google Classroom:
Each class will have their own Google Classroom, which we hope most of our families are familiar with from school. Think of this as your “Members Only” online access to your new dance experience! In the virtual classroom, you’ll have access to the Zoom class meeting links, recital choreography, class recordings, activities, extra online classes, coloring pages, and as much extra content as we can get our hands on. Our teachers will still be teaching recital choreography during this time and this will be posted in your classroom so our dancers can be preparing for the show.

--Additional Activities and Opportunities:
You keep hearing us mention extra content. We are hoping to round out this new dance experience with some fun activities, dance challenges, and links to other online learning opportunities. The dance industry is really pulling together in this uncertain time and sharing resources. We have been collaborating with lots of other studios and organizations and will organize the content we feel best fits our dance family into your Google Classrooms. In addition, we’ll be scheduling some Zoom family dance parties so the whole family can join in with the fun!

--Recital:
We still plan on holding a recital this year! As they say, “The show must go on!” Our recital date is currently June 13th and we are hoping to perform that day. We obviously cannot make any promises on what that show might look like yet. Ordinarily we would be sending home recital info packets and getting ready to sell tickets. Instead we are planning for contingency plans A, B, C, and D. Whether we have our typical big show at Serrano, have multiple smaller shows in another venue (or even outdoors), or postpone until safe, we will get our dancers on stage in costume to showcase all their hard work. This year’s recital name “Undefeated” has more meaning for us now than it did when chosen. We all agree that our dancers deserve to perform this season despite the crazy circumstances we currently find ourselves in!

As much as it saddens us, we have found ourselves in this new normal for the time being, which hopefully won’t last too long. Rest assured that we are committed to continuing to offer you the best customer service and dance experience during this time. These are truly uncharted waters we are navigating. We plan on taking on this challenge week by week, making/adjusting our plans as the situation progresses, so that we may resume in-studio instruction as soon as it is safe for the community to do so.

We deeply thank you for your support. As a small business, your continued dedication to our mission to provide your child with invaluable life skills through dance ensures we can continue doing the work we do. Our dance family is wonderful and we truly feel that you all understand and appreciate the fact that our dance studio is our family business with overhead and employees. We want to make sure our studio is here to serve your needs after all of this uncertainty is over and we get back to our routines.

As we recognize that everyone’s situation is unique, we ask that you be honest and consider your plans in regard to dance classes for April. We are asking that families process their April tuition online. If you have not done this before, go to our website and click the “My Account” tab. You can log in to your account with the email address we have on file and click forgot my password. (Side note: You may notice that your balance looks higher than usual - this is because costume balances are on file at this time with a due date of 4/24. If you cannot figure out your tuition balance, just send Miss Becky an email to check). This pandemic has affected families in various ways and we are sensitive to this fact. We don’t want to exclude anyone from our program or our recital. Please reach out by email if you need to set up an alternative payment plan or request discounts or temporary scholarships. Alternately, if your family is in a position to donate to scholarships for families extremely affected by this pandemic, please reach out by email as well. Either way, we need to hear from ALL families by Friday 4/3 about their plans for April, communicated by an email or processing a tuition payment online. This will help us gauge our next steps.

This first week of online classes will remain our regular schedule as we consider it finishing out March but changes are possible in coming weeks as we evaluate how this platform works and  figure how to best serve our families.

While we are sad not to see our students face to face, we are looking forward to connecting with them weekly and sharing the magic of dance!  This virtual platform is new to all of us in the dance community, so bear with us as we learn this together and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us.

How to join your online dance class

How to Join Our Classes

Dance Space:
We realize that space is limited and we want our dancers to be safe. Most of our teachers are also teaching from small spaces so we completely understand. Dancers can dance in place if they have to - if they can do a jumping jack, they can dance :). If possible, push furniture out of the way and move breakables. Be careful of your flooring surface - tile can be slippery so perhaps use a rug. You’d be surprised how many areas of your house can work though. We’ve seen dancers in the hallway, kitchen, bedrooms, and living rooms. Dancing outside is even ok. In this new format the trick is to be creative, a chair or table can be used as a ballet barre! Encourage your dancer to dress in proper dance attire just like they would for class.

Equipment:
We recommend using a computer or laptop if possible, preferably with a webcam. Hooking it up to your TV gives you the biggest screen. A tablet or iPad is the next best option. While its not ideal, a smartphone is still completely fine. We have tried some online classes by smartphone and our dancers have been able to follow along.

Google:
We will be sending out emails today to each class with the code to join their Google Classroom. We have found that students cannot join our classes with their Snowline email address so please use another email address (either your parent email or another email address your child has). Join the Google Classroom and take a look around. Check the Classwork section for all your class content. You may see your child’s recital costume under Recital Dance :). You’ll notice Class Dates in your classwork. This is where you’ll find links to our Zoom meetings. Your teacher may also communicate with dancers on the Class Stream.

Zoom:
If you have never used Zoom, we suggest using a computer or tablet (the bigger the better so you can see everything) and getting it ready in advance when you are preparing your dance space. Then you’ll be ready to get started on time.
-- Once you click the link in your Google Classroom, Zoom will launch in a new window. If you have never used Zoom before you may have to install the Zoom App/Program onto your device.
-- Make sure you have the video enabled so your teacher can see you!
-- Keep your microphone muted until your teacher wants to speak with you or if you have a question. Background noise makes sound cut out for the whole class.
-- Speaker View or Gallery View can be found in the upper right corner on a computer or found by swiping to the left on a mobile device.
-- Enjoy your dance class!!
**If you are not directly clicking the link to your class, you can join by Meeting ID . . . .
-- Open the Zoom app and enter the Meeting ID found in your Google Classroom. Enter the password.

Let us know if you have any questions or need any tech help while we get this all set up!

We're Going Online

Hello Studio K Families,
We hope you all are staying healthy and safe during this unexpected break. We just wanted to give you a very quick update on our plans here at Studio K.

We're currently working on ways to offer our classes virtually so we can all continue dancing! We feel it is important to keep some regular activities in our lives right now so we're making it a priority to keep our kids dancing. We are working out the technical and logistical details of this and we will send out specifics on how we're going to make this happen real soon.

Thanks for sticking with us, enjoy the rest of your break, and we'll "see" all our dancers soon!

COVID-19 Update

3/18/2020

Dear Studio K Dance Families and Dancers:We are in unsettling times and with information and news about COVID-19 shifting quickly, we have been taking things day by day.
Studio K has reviewed guidelines recommended by health and government officials, and in the best interest of our community’s safety and health, we are proceeding to make the difficult decision to suspend dance classes at Studio K.
Being that our common areas, dressing room, and parent waiting rooms are very small, we cannot successfully follow the state guidelines for social distancing.
We will be closed Monday, March 16 - Saturday, March 28th. We plan to reopen on Monday March 30th, and will keep you informed should that date change.
This essentially extends our already scheduled Spring Break (March 23rd-March 28th) by 1 week. We always credit dancers with makeup classes for missed classes so in this case dancers will be receiving make-up classes for this unforeseen closure. Makeups are always valid through recital and can be used at any class on the schedule of the dancers' level. Also, we will be offering a dance party workshop with fun classes at no charge - date TBA.
Until then, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for being a part of our incredible community.
Keep an eye on our social media for links to fun dance videos and activities to keep your dancers busy this week. We look forward to having everyone back to class soon!
Stay healthy!
